Bar
Food · Pantry & Condiment · Food, Typed Supps
The health-food end and the confectionery end of this shelf are closer together than the packaging suggests.
Stage by stage
- Intake (Chewing): Chewing effort varies enormously across the family, from coarse nut fragments to a fat-and-sugar emulsion in seconds.
- Stomach (Gastric emptying): Fat and protein slow emptying; the refined syrup binder moves through quickly.
- Small intestine (Absorption): Intact nut cell walls trap some fat and blunt the response; syrup, wafer and puffed rice do not.
- Bloodstream (Energy handling): Glucose is used or stored, and the coated bars add a saturated fat load on top of the sugar.
Time to effect
- Under an hour: Blood glucose rises within roughly 20 to 45 minutes, earliest in the wafer and nougat bars.
Allergens
None of the fourteen major allergens. May contain: Gluten, Eggs, Milk, Peanuts, Sesame, Soya, Sulphites, Tree nuts. Derived from what this food is, not from a product label.
Eating patterns
Fits: Vegan, Vegetarian, Pescatarian, Halal, Kosher. Depends on the product: Low-FODMAP, Gluten-free.
Satiety
Not scored: the satiety index is measured on 240 kcal servings, and nobody eats a 240 kcal serving of this. The question does not apply rather than the answer being unknown.
Cost band
Mid — roughly £5 per kg, as a band midpoint rather than a price.

Food vs. supplement
Protein bars are a convenience format rather than a nutrient source you could not get elsewhere. The same protein, without the binding syrup and coating fat, comes from yoghurt, milk, eggs or a handful of nuts.
Kitchen tip
Check ingredient order before the nutrition panel. Nuts or oats listed first means a bar built from food; glucose syrup or sugar first means a confection with some oats in it.
Common myth
“A muesli bar is the healthy version of a chocolate bar.” In reality: Often not. Yoghurt- and chocolate-coated muesli bars can match a confectionery bar of the same weight on sugar and saturated fat. The useful divide inside this family is how much of the bar is intact nuts and oats versus how much is syrup, fat and aerated filler — and that divide does not follow the packaging.
