Coffee Mix
Food · Drink · Food, Typed Supps
Instant coffee, sugar and a fat-based whitener dried into one powder. The coffee is the smallest part of it by weight.
Stage by stage
- Intake (Dissolves completely): Spray-dried coffee, sugar and fat-coated glucose solids go into solution in hot water with nothing left to digest.
- Stomach and gut (Fast sugar absorption): Sugar in solution with no fibre or protein produces a rapid glycaemic rise, the same shape a soft drink gives.
- Central nervous system (Adenosine blockade): Around 90mg caffeine per sachet blocks adenosine receptors, peaking at 30 to 60 minutes and half-cleared by about five hours.
- Circulation (Saturated fat from the whitener): The whitener's vegetable fat is almost entirely saturated, which is the one nutritional difference between this and coffee with milk.
Time to effect
- Under an hour: Caffeine reaches peak plasma concentration 30 to 60 minutes after drinking.
Allergens
None of the fourteen major allergens. May contain: Gluten, Milk, Soya. Derived from what this food is, not from a product label.
Eating patterns
Fits: Vegan, Vegetarian, Pescatarian, Halal, Kosher. Depends on the product: Low-FODMAP, Gluten-free.
Satiety
Not scored: the satiety index is measured on 240 kcal servings, and nobody eats a 240 kcal serving of this. The question does not apply rather than the answer being unknown.
Environmental footprint
28.5 kg CO2e and 1571 litres of freshwater per kg, matched to "Coffee" in Poore & Nemecek (2018), Science 360.
Cost band
Pricey — roughly £20 per kg, as a band midpoint rather than a price.
Key nutrients
- Caffeine
- Added sugar
- Saturated fat (from the whitener)

Food vs. supplement
For caffeine alone, the comparison is unflattering: a sachet supplies roughly 90mg with about 3g of added sugar and 2g of saturated fat attached, while plain instant or brewed coffee supplies the same caffeine with neither. The mix is buying convenience and shelf stability, not any nutrient.
Kitchen tip
Instant coffee, hot water and your own milk gives the same drink with the sugar and the fat under your control. If the convenience is the point, half a sachet topped up with milk is a smaller change than switching product.
Common myth
“The creamer in it is dried milk.” In reality: It is vegetable fat spray-dried onto glucose solids. That fat, not the coffee, accounts for nearly all of the 11.9g saturated fat per 100g on the panel.
