Corned Beef (Canned)
Food · Protein · Food, Typed Supps
Genuinely good protein and B12, wrapped in 750 mg of sodium.
Stage by stage
- Cured through (The tin): Brine penetrates the whole tissue, which is why rinsing achieves nothing.
- Complete protein (Stomach): 21.5 g per 100 g, with the full amino acid profile.
- B12 and zinc (Circulation): 3.2 mcg of B12 exceeds a day’s requirement; zinc at 3.4 mg is a quarter of one.
- Sodium (Extracellular fluid): 750 mg per 100 g — the price of the shelf stability.
Timing
Nothing to time. What surrounds it on the plate is the only real lever — the sodium in the meat is fixed.
Time to effect
- Per 100 g: 3.2 mcg B12, 21.5 g protein, 750 mg sodium.
- 2–4 weeks: Blood pressure response to a change in sodium intake.
Allergens
None of the fourteen major allergens. Derived from what this food is, not from a product label.
Eating patterns
Fits: Keto, Low-FODMAP, Gluten-free. Depends on the product: Halal, Kosher.
Satiety
129 on the satiety index, where white bread is 100 — moderate. Modelled from the Holt et al. (1995) measurements.
Environmental footprint
99.5 kg CO2e and 1451 litres of freshwater per kg, matched to "Beef (beef herd)" in Poore & Nemecek (2018), Science 360.
Cost band
Pricey — roughly £14 per kg, as a band midpoint rather than a price.

Food vs. supplement
Shelf-stable complete protein is a genuinely hard thing to make, and this is one of the few foods that does it. In remote or emergency settings that is a real advantage, which is a different calculation from routine use at home.
Kitchen tip
Do not bother rinsing it — the salt is right through the meat. Building the rest of the plate around potassium-rich vegetables does more.
Common myth
“I rinse it first to get some of the salt off.” In reality: It does nothing. Corned beef is brine-cured, so the sodium is distributed through the whole of the meat rather than sitting on the surface — there is nothing to rinse away. What does change the meal is what goes beside it: potassium-rich vegetables shift the overall balance in a way the meat itself cannot be made to.
