Cream Cheese
Food · Dairy · Food, Typed Supps
Legally a cheese, nutritionally much closer to cream.
Stage by stage
- Cream, not milk (The cheese): Made from cream, which is why it behaves nutritionally like cream.
- Low protein (Muscle): 8.5 g per 100 g — about a third of cheddar.
- Calcium gap (Skeleton): 69 mg per 100 g against cheddar’s 800; calcium follows the curd, not the fat.
- Saturated fat (Liver): 22.07 g per 100 g, essentially the same as cream.
Timing
Nothing to time. A generous bagel spread is around 40 g, which is where the useful arithmetic sits.
Time to effect
- Per 40 g: About 136 calories and 8.8 g saturated fat.
- 3–4 weeks: LDL response to sustained saturated fat change.
Allergens
Contains: Milk. Derived from what this food is, not from a product label.
Eating patterns
Fits: Vegetarian, Pescatarian, Halal, Kosher, Keto, Gluten-free. Depends on the product: Low-FODMAP.
Satiety
73 on the satiety index, where white bread is 100 — low. Modelled from the Holt et al. (1995) measurements.
Environmental footprint
23.9 kg CO2e and 5605 litres of freshwater per kg, matched to "Cheese" in Poore & Nemecek (2018), Science 360.
Cost band
Mid — roughly £8 per kg, as a band midpoint rather than a price.

Food vs. supplement
Calcium in cheese comes from the casein curd, and cream cheese is made from the part of milk the curd was separated from. That single manufacturing fact explains the twelvefold calcium gap.
Kitchen tip
Ricotta spreads almost the same way with three times the protein and half the calories. Cottage cheese blended smooth does it too.
Common myth
“Cream cheese counts as a dairy serve — it’s cheese.” In reality: It has 69 mg of calcium per 100 g against cheddar’s 800, and 8.5 g of protein against 24.6. Calcium goes with the curd during cheesemaking, and cream cheese is made from the cream that was separated off. Nutritionally it belongs with cream. Its one genuine advantage over other cheeses is low sodium, at 320 mg per 100 g.
