Flaxseed Oil
Food · Fat & Oil · Food, Typed Supps
Flaxseed oil is a plant-based way to get omega-3 fat, but your body only turns a small part of it into the "active" omega-3s found in fish oil.
Stage by stage
- Consumed (Mouth & esophagus): Flaxseed oil is swallowed as nearly pure fat, delivering concentrated alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) with none of the fiber or lignans found in whole flaxseeds.
- Churned (Stomach): In the stomach, minor fat breakdown begins, though most digestion of the oil occurs further downstream.
- Absorbed (Small intestine): Bile emulsifies the oil into tiny droplets in the small intestine, where pancreatic lipase breaks the ALA-rich triglycerides into fatty acids for absorption into intestinal cells.
- Converted (Liver): The liver takes up absorbed ALA and converts a small fraction—roughly 5-10%—into EPA, with even less becoming DHA; the rest is used for energy or stored as fat.
Timing
Taking flaxseed oil with a meal that contains some fat improves bile release and absorption of its fat-soluble triglycerides; people taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications, such as warfarin, should check with a clinician first, since flaxseed oil can modestly reduce platelet aggregation and raise bleeding risk.
Time to effect
- Days to weeks: Blood levels of ALA rise within days of regular intake, but downstream conversion to EPA and measurable shifts in inflammatory or triglyceride markers typically take several weeks of consistent use to appear.
Allergens
None of the fourteen major allergens. Derived from what this food is, not from a product label.
Eating patterns
Fits: Vegan, Vegetarian, Pescatarian, Halal, Kosher, Keto, Gluten-free. Depends on the product: Low-FODMAP.
Satiety
30 on the satiety index, where white bread is 100 — low. Modelled from the Holt et al. (1995) measurements.
Environmental footprint
7.3 kg CO2e and 1098 litres of freshwater per kg, matched to "Palm oil" in Poore & Nemecek (2018), Science 360.
Cost band
Pricey — roughly £12 per kg, as a band midpoint rather than a price.

Food vs. supplement
Flaxseed oil (liquid or in softgels) concentrates the plant omega-3 ALA without the fiber and lignans found in whole or ground flaxseed, and unlike fish oil it contains no preformed EPA or DHA—only ALA that the body must convert, inefficiently, into those forms.
Kitchen tip
Store flaxseed oil in a dark, airtight bottle in the refrigerator, use it within 4-6 weeks of opening, and add it cold to smoothies, salad dressings, or finished dishes rather than cooking with it, since its smoke point is only about 225°F (107°C).
Common myth
"Flaxseed oil is just as good as fish oil for getting your omega-3s." In reality: Flaxseed oil supplies only the plant omega-3 ALA; the body converts an estimated 5-10% of it to EPA and under 4% to DHA, so it cannot substitute gram-for-gram for the preformed EPA and DHA found in fish oil.
