Gravy Powder
Food · Pantry & Condiment · Food, Typed Supps
Mostly salt and thickened starch — the sodium figure is the whole story here.
Stage by stage
- Intake (Mouth): Powder is reconstituted in hot liquid at high dilution before it reaches the plate.
- Cooking (Pan): Pregelatinised starch hydrates and thickens without needing a roux, unlike gravy made from pan drippings.
- Small intestine (Small intestine): Sodium and chloride are absorbed rapidly and near-completely; the chloride figure confirms it is largely plain salt.
- Circulation and kidneys (Kidneys): Excess sodium is excreted renally; habitual high intake raises blood pressure in salt-sensitive people.
Time to effect
- Weeks: Sodium is absorbed within an hour, but the blood-pressure effect of habitual intake takes weeks to months to establish or reverse.
Allergens
None of the fourteen major allergens. May contain: Celery, Gluten, Milk, Mustard, Soya, Sulphites. Derived from what this food is, not from a product label.
Eating patterns
Fits: Vegan, Vegetarian, Pescatarian, Halal, Kosher. Depends on the product: Low-FODMAP, Gluten-free.
Satiety
Not scored: the satiety index is measured on 240 kcal servings, and nobody eats a 240 kcal serving of this. The question does not apply rather than the answer being unknown.
Cost band
Mid — roughly £5 per kg, as a band midpoint rather than a price.

Food vs. supplement
Not a supplement question. The comparison worth making is with gravy built from pan juices and a little flour, which delivers the same function with the salt under the cook's control rather than the manufacturer's.
Kitchen tip
Use less powder than the packet directs and make up the volume with the roasting pan's own juices — the fond carries most of the flavour the powder is imitating, and the sodium falls in direct proportion to the powder left out.
Common myth
"Gravy is a small addition, so its salt does not count." In reality: It is diluted, but a generous serving still carries a few hundred milligrams of sodium. Sauces, stocks and gravies together are one of the larger hidden contributors to daily sodium.
