Orange Juice
Food · Drink · Food, Typed Supps
Real vitamin C and folate, arriving with none of the fruit’s fibre.
Stage by stage
- Intake (Matrix already removed): Juicing has discarded the cell walls, so nothing slows absorption down.
- Sugar uptake (Small intestine): Free sugars are absorbed rapidly, giving a higher glycaemic response than whole fruit.
- Ascorbate (Circulation): Vitamin C is absorbed efficiently at dietary doses and enters circulation.
- Iron enhancement (Duodenum): Ascorbate reduces and chelates non-heme iron, substantially increasing its absorption from the same meal.
Timing
Most useful drunk with an iron-rich plant meal. Otherwise the whole fruit does the same nutritional job more slowly and more filling.
Time to effect
- Same meal: The iron-absorption boost applies only to the meal it accompanies.
- Hours: Ascorbate is absorbed and distributed within hours.
Allergens
None of the fourteen major allergens. May contain: Sulphites. Derived from what this food is, not from a product label.
Eating patterns
Fits: Vegan, Vegetarian, Pescatarian, Halal, Kosher, Low-FODMAP, Gluten-free. Depends on the product: Keto.
Satiety
Not scored: the satiety index is measured on 240 kcal servings, and nobody eats a 240 kcal serving of this. The question does not apply rather than the answer being unknown.
Environmental footprint
0.4 kg CO2e and 83 litres of freshwater per kg, matched to "Citrus fruit" in Poore & Nemecek (2018), Science 360.
Cost band
Cheap — roughly £2 per kg, as a band midpoint rather than a price.

Food vs. supplement
The vitamin C is real and equivalent to the whole fruit’s. What juice cannot replace is the fibre and the satiety — which is why guidelines cap it as a fruit substitute rather than treating it as one.
Kitchen tip
If you are taking iron or eating a plant-based iron source, drinking the juice with that meal is what makes the difference — not drinking it at another time of day.
Common myth
“A glass of juice counts as a serve of fruit.” In reality: It carries the vitamin C and folate, and it loses the fibre. Free sugars arrive without the matrix that slows them, which is why guidelines allow at most one juice serve a day toward fruit intake and why the whole orange is the better default.
