Peanut Oil
Food · Fat & Oil · Food, Typed Supps
The stir-fry oil, and usually safe in peanut allergy — with one exception that matters.
Stage by stage
- Refinement decides (The bottle): Refined peanut oil has the protein removed; cold-pressed does not.
- Allergen (Immune system): Where protein remains, reactions in sensitised people are immediate.
- Monounsaturated (Circulation): 50.28 g per 100 g, and a high smoke point for wok cooking.
- Saturated fat (Liver): 17.36 g per 100 g — more than double canola.
Timing
No nutritional timing. The allergy question needs answering before the meal, not after.
Time to effect
- Minutes: Reaction onset where allergenic protein is present.
- 3–4 weeks: LDL response to fat substitution, on the separate lipid question.
Allergens
Contains: Peanuts. Derived from what this food is, not from a product label.
Eating patterns
Fits: Vegan, Vegetarian, Pescatarian, Halal, Kosher, Low-FODMAP, Gluten-free. Depends on the product: Keto.
Environmental footprint
2.9 kg CO2e and 1852 litres of freshwater per kg, matched to "Groundnuts" in Poore & Nemecek (2018), Science 360.
Cost band
Cheap — roughly £3 per kg, as a band midpoint rather than a price.

Food vs. supplement
This is one of the few entries where the manufacturing process, not the ingredient, determines whether a food is dangerous. The same plant, refined or not, is either safe or contraindicated.
Kitchen tip
If you have a peanut allergy, ask whether the oil is refined — and if nobody knows, treat it as unrefined.
Common myth
“Peanut oil is fine with a peanut allergy — the protein is removed.” In reality: It is removed in highly refined peanut oil, and guidance generally treats that as tolerated. It is not removed in cold-pressed, gourmet or unrefined peanut oil, which retain allergenic protein. The bottle does not always distinguish them and a restaurant kitchen usually cannot tell you. Ask; if the answer is unknown, treat it as unrefined.
