Soy Milk
Food · Legume · Food, Typed Supps
Soy milk is a plant milk with real protein, close to what you'd get from cow's milk, plus calcium and vitamin D when it's fortified.
Stage by stage
- Swallowed (Mouth): Soy milk is swallowed, carrying complete protein, isoflavones, and, if fortified, calcium and vitamin D into digestion.
- Digested (Stomach): In the stomach, gastric acid and pepsin begin breaking soy proteins into smaller peptide fragments.
- Absorbed (Small Intestine): In the small intestine, peptides are broken down into amino acids, isoflavone glycosides are converted into absorbable forms, and fortified calcium and vitamin D cross into the bloodstream.
- Utilized (Bones & Muscles): Amino acids support muscle repair and growth, while absorbed calcium and vitamin D are deposited into bone to help maintain skeletal strength.
Timing
Soy milk can be consumed at any time of day, and its protein, isoflavone, and calcium absorption are not significantly affected by pairing it with food — though people taking levothyroxine should separate soy intake from their medication by several hours, since soy compounds can interfere with drug absorption.
Time to effect
- Weeks to Months: Isoflavones are absorbed and metabolized within hours of drinking soy milk, but benefits like modestly higher bone mineral density from consistent fortified calcium and vitamin D intake typically take weeks to months of regular consumption to become measurable.
Allergens
Contains: Soya. Derived from what this food is, not from a product label.
Eating patterns
Fits: Vegan, Vegetarian, Pescatarian, Halal, Kosher, Keto, Gluten-free.
Satiety
178 on the satiety index, where white bread is 100 — high. Modelled from the Holt et al. (1995) measurements.
Environmental footprint
1 kg CO2e and 28 litres of freshwater per kg, matched to "Soy milk" in Poore & Nemecek (2018), Science 360.
Cost band
Cheap — roughly £2.5 per kg, as a band midpoint rather than a price.
Key nutrients

Food vs. supplement
Whole soy milk provides isoflavones alongside protein, fiber, and (when fortified) calcium and vitamin D in one balanced package, unlike isolated soy isoflavone supplements, which deliver much higher, less physiologic doses without the accompanying nutrients.
Kitchen tip
Shake the carton well before pouring — fortified calcium settles to the bottom over time, and an unshaken serving may deliver less calcium than the nutrition label states.
Common myth
"Soy milk is loaded with estrogen and will raise your breast cancer risk or feminize men." In reality: Soy isoflavones are phytoestrogens structurally similar to, but functionally far weaker than, human estrogen. Human studies find no feminizing hormonal effects in men from typical soy intake and no increased breast cancer risk in women; some cohort data instead suggest a protective association among long-term soy consumers, particularly in populations with lifelong intake.
