Taco Seasoning Mix
Food · Pantry & Condiment · Food, Typed Supps
Every number here looks extreme until you remember a sachet is 30 grams shared between four people.
Stage by stage
- Intake (Never eaten alone): A dry powder stirred into meat or beans — the dish, not the sachet, is what gets eaten.
- Cooking and stomach (Dissolved and dispersed): On hydration the salt, starch carrier and spices disperse evenly through the whole dish.
- Absorption (Sodium taken up completely): Sodium absorption is essentially complete; the micronutrients scale down to negligible amounts per serve.
- Circulation (Renal sodium clearance): Roughly 470mg sodium per serving from a 30g sachet split four ways, before tortillas, cheese and salsa are counted.
Time to effect
- Hours: Thirst and mild fluid retention follow a high-sodium meal; blood pressure effects need weeks of habitual intake.
Allergens
None of the fourteen major allergens. May contain: Celery, Gluten, Milk, Mustard, Soya, Sulphites. Derived from what this food is, not from a product label.
Eating patterns
Fits: Vegan, Vegetarian, Pescatarian, Halal, Kosher. Depends on the product: Low-FODMAP, Gluten-free.
Satiety
Not scored: the satiety index is measured on 240 kcal servings, and nobody eats a 240 kcal serving of this. The question does not apply rather than the answer being unknown.
Cost band
Mid — roughly £5 per kg, as a band midpoint rather than a price.
Key nutrients
Nutrition per 100g
- Calories: 319
- Protein: 6.2g
- Carbohydrate: 58.1g
- of which sugars: 28.5g
- Fat: 4.8g
- of which saturated: 1.3g
- Fibre: 8.7g
- Sodium: 6238mg
Food vs. supplement
Not applicable. Its nutrient columns are artefacts of expressing a concentrate per 100g, and none of them survive the dilution to a real serving.
Kitchen tip
Half a sachet plus extra cumin and paprika tastes close to a full one and halves the sodium; a home blend removes the salt decision from the manufacturer entirely.
Common myth
"Look at the iron and fibre — a spice mix is secretly nutritious." In reality: Per 100g it looks that way, but nobody eats 100g of seasoning. At a realistic seven grams per plate the iron is about 0.4mg of poorly absorbed non-heme iron and the fibre about 0.6g. The salt is the only figure that survives the dilution.
