Toasted Muesli (Granola)
Food · Grain · Food, Typed Supps
The word toasted means fried in oil and sugar. That is what the toasting is.
Stage by stage
- What toasting is (The process): Oats coated in oil and syrup, then baked until they clump.
- Energy density (Stomach): 424 calories per 100 g, and a poured bowl is often 60–80 g.
- Added sugar (Circulation): 14.8 g per 100 g, from the syrup that made the clusters.
- Real nutrition too (Systemic): 6.94 mg vitamin E, 110 mg magnesium and 7.6 g fibre, from the nuts and oats.
Timing
Nothing to time. Portion is the whole variable, and granola conceals portion better than almost any other cereal.
Time to effect
- 15–30 min: Glycaemic peak.
- Per poured bowl: Often 60–80 g, or 250–340 calories before milk.

Food vs. supplement
Untoasted muesli is the same oats, nuts and dried fruit without the oil-and-syrup coating: it keeps the fibre, magnesium and vitamin E and drops most of the fat and added sugar.
Kitchen tip
Weigh what you normally pour. Granola clusters look like a small amount and a usual bowl is often twice the reference serve.
Common myth
“Granola is the healthy cereal — it’s just oats, nuts and fruit.” In reality: Those ingredients are all in it, and the toasting is what makes it granola: the oats are coated in oil and syrup and baked. That is 17.6 g of fat and 14.8 g of added sugar per 100 g, against untoasted muesli at 10.8 g and far less. The fibre, magnesium and vitamin E are genuine. Untoasted muesli keeps them and leaves out the coating.
