Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP)
Food · Protein · Food, Typed Supps
TVP is dried soy chunks that turn hearty and meaty once you soak them — cheap, high in protein, and not the "hormone bomb" people worry about.
Stage by stage
- Rehydration & Chewing (Mouth): Dry TVP is rehydrated in hot water or broth and chewed, beginning mechanical breakdown of its fibrous soy protein structure.
- Protein Breakdown (Stomach): Stomach acid and pepsin denature and cleave the soy protein into smaller peptides.
- Amino Acid Absorption (Small Intestine): The small intestine's enzymes finish breaking peptides into amino acids, which are absorbed into the bloodstream along with the soybean's isoflavones.
- Muscle Protein Synthesis (Skeletal Muscle): Amino acids travel to muscle and other tissues to be used for protein synthesis and repair.
Timing
TVP isn't a pill or powder taken on a schedule; it's rehydrated and cooked into meals, so timing is simply about spreading protein-rich meals across the day rather than any fasted-versus-fed consideration.
Time to effect
- Hours to Weeks: A meal containing TVP raises blood amino acid levels within one to two hours, but using that protein to build noticeably more muscle requires weeks of consistently adequate protein intake combined with resistance exercise.
Allergens
Contains: Soya. Derived from what this food is, not from a product label.
Eating patterns
Fits: Vegan, Vegetarian, Pescatarian, Halal, Kosher, Gluten-free. Depends on the product: Low-FODMAP.
Satiety
227 on the satiety index, where white bread is 100 — very high. Modelled from the Holt et al. (1995) measurements.
Environmental footprint
3.2 kg CO2e and 149 litres of freshwater per kg, matched to "Tofu" in Poore & Nemecek (2018), Science 360.
Cost band
Mid — roughly £11 per kg, as a band midpoint rather than a price.

Food vs. supplement
TVP is a whole-food-derived protein made from defatted soy flour, so — unlike an isolated soy protein powder supplement — it still carries the soybean's dietary fiber (roughly 11-18g per 100g dry) and isoflavones along with its protein, at a fraction of the cost per gram of protein.
Kitchen tip
Rehydrate dry TVP in hot broth (about equal parts liquid to TVP) for 5-10 minutes before cooking, and season it generously, since on its own it is nearly flavor-neutral.
Common myth
"Soy foods like TVP raise your estrogen levels and increase your risk of breast cancer." In reality: Human clinical and cohort studies reviewed by NIH's National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health have not found that eating soy foods raises circulating estrogen to physiologically meaningful levels in men or increases breast cancer risk or recurrence in women; soy's isoflavones act as weak, selective modulators of estrogen receptors rather than potent hormones.
