Every other entry in the Typed food library. Each one is a full page: what it does, stage by stage, and what the evidence says.
- Banana ChipA fried snack made from fruit, closer to a crisp than to a banana.
- CaramelsSugar, butter and milk cooked together. Cook it longer and hotter and a chewy caramel becomes a hard one.
- ChocolateNeither of these is the chocolate the health headlines are about.
- ConfectioneryThese are all chocolate around a centre. A nut centre means more fat; a fruit or sugar centre means more sugar.
- HamburgerA salad burger and a cheese-and-sauce burger are the same beef and the same bun with very different totals.
- Ice ConfectionA water ice is basically frozen sugar water. A milk stick has cream in it, which changes almost everything.
- JellyEvery calorie in a bowl of jelly is sugar, and there is nothing else in it.
- Jelly CrystalsSugar and gelatine in a sachet. Once made up with water, a serving is mostly water.
- LasagneA balanced enough dish on its own. The frozen version is usually much saltier and has less meat.
- LiquoriceBlack liquorice contains a compound that can genuinely raise blood pressure. The coloured allsorts mostly do not.
- LollyAn honest treat. The differences between types are about texture and how long they linger, not nutrition.
- Macaroni CheesePasta, milk and cheese — the recipe decides everything, because the ingredients barely change.
- MeringueAlmost pure sugar, whipped with egg white and dried out.
- Pasta in Cream Based SauceTwo entries, one product: the powder in the packet and the same thing once water has been added.
- Potato Crisps or ChipsFrying swaps the potato's water for oil. That single swap is most of what you are eating.
- Potato StrawsA treat food where the cut, not the potato, decides how much oil ends up on your plate.
- Sausage RollThe meat is the smaller part of the story. Laminated pastry is roughly a third fat by weight before anything goes inside it.
- SeedGrind them, or you get very little. The whole seed's shell survives digestion more or less intact.
- Snack Ball"No added sugar" is true here and slightly beside the point — the dates bring the sugar with them.
- Spaghetti in Tomato Cheese SauceA cheap, filling tinned meal whose only real variable is how much salt is in it.
- Spring RollA fried pastry wrapper around a mostly vegetable filling — the frying is what changes the numbers.
- Steak VegetablesConvenient and safe for years on a shelf, but diluted with sauce and salted to make up for it.
- Vegetable Crisps or ChipsThey are vegetables the way hot chips are vegetables: the frying oil is most of what you are eating.
