Spot reduction: choosing where fat leaves
Learn · Body composition · Explainer, Typed Supps
Crunches strengthen your abs. They don’t burn the fat over them — fat leaves from everywhere, on your body’s schedule, not yours.
Stage by stage
- Pooled supply (Systemic withdrawal): Fat-release signals go out body-wide and the fuel travels by blood. The asking muscle isn’t served by the fat above it.
- The trials (No local loss): Six weeks of ab work: no belly-fat change. Twelve weeks of one-leg training: fat left the torso, both legs equal.
- The pattern (Hormones set the map): Sex hormones and receptor balance decide where fat sits and which depot empties last. Stubborn means last in the queue, not exempt.
- What works (Build under, lose over): Grow the muscle beneath; bring total fat down. The region changes when the two meet — the only mechanism on offer.
What the evidence supports
- exercising a region reduces the fat over that region — insufficient evidence. The founding claim, tested head-on at least twice with matched designs, and absent both times.
- For context: an overall energy deficit reduces fat across all regions, including the target — strong evidence. The only demonstrated route to regional leanness — it just refuses to skip the queue.
- For context: sex hormones and receptor densities set fat distribution — strong evidence. Well-characterised android/gynoid patterning and depot-level receptor differences.
- For context: training a region grows and strengthens that region’s muscle — strong evidence. Uncontroversial — and the legitimate half of every “toning” promise.
Timing
No timing, exercise order or “lower-ab finisher” changes fat topology. Train regions for strength and shape; run the deficit for the reveal.
Time to effect
- 2–6 wks: Strength and endurance in the trained region.
- Months: Total fat loss reaching whichever region you were aiming at.
Common myth
“Crunches burn belly fat.” In reality: Tested directly: six weeks of abdominal training changed abdominal endurance and left the fat exactly where it was. The deficit decides how much fat leaves; your genetics decide the order; the crunches decide only how strong the abs underneath are.
