Water Aerobics
Move · Cardio · Movement, Typed Supps
Buoyancy removes most of your weight, while the water replaces the resistance.
Stage by stage
- Immersion (Buoyancy offloads joints): Chest-deep immersion removes roughly 60 to 75% of effective bodyweight from your joints.
- During (Resistance in every direction): Water resists both the pushing and returning phases, with almost no lengthening-under-load and therefore little soreness.
- Measuring effort (Heart rate reads lower): Heart rate runs roughly 10 to 15 beats lower in water at the same oxygen uptake, so land-based targets underestimate the work.
- Days later (Fitness without impact): Aerobic fitness and muscular endurance improve, though bone receives no loading stimulus.
Muscles trained
- Primary: heart
- Secondary: quads, shoulders, lungs
Intensity
5.3 METs (Water aerobics, water calisthenics, water exercise).
Time to effect
- Weeks: Fitness and strength improve over weeks; joint comfort often improves sooner.

Common myth
“Water aerobics is too gentle to count as proper exercise.” In reality: Trials in arthritis and older adults find meaningful gains in fitness, pain and function — and adherence is far better than land exercise for people in whom land exercise hurts.
