Child’s Pose
Move · Flexibility & Mobility · Movement, Typed Supps
A resting fold that lengthens the lower back and slows your breathing down.
Stage by stage
- Set-up (Kneeling fold): Kneel and fold forward over the thighs, with no weight through the spine.
- During (Lumbar erectors lengthen): The lower back lengthens in unloaded flexion, with hips fully flexed.
- Breathing (Posterior ribcage expands): Belly compression against the thighs redirects the breath into the back and sides of the ribcage.
- After a minute or two (Parasympathetic shift): The slower, deeper breathing pattern raises vagal activity and settles the nervous system.
Muscles trained
- Primary: lower back
- Secondary: lats, shoulders, quads
Intensity
2.3 METs (Stretching, mild).
Time to effect
- Minutes: The calming effect appears within a minute or two and does not require regular practice to work.

Common myth
“It decompresses your spine.” In reality: It unloads the spine, which is not the same claim. Removing compressive load lets the tissue lengthen comfortably; it does not create traction or pull the vertebrae apart, and nothing about the benefit needs it to.
