Contrast Water Therapy

Hot and cold alternating. Better evidence than cold alone, and less of a downside.
Stage by stage
- During (Cutaneous vasomotor cycling): Vessels near the skin open in heat and close in cold, cycling blood flow between skin and deeper tissue.
- Next 24-48 hours (Soreness): Delayed-onset soreness is consistently reduced compared with passive rest.
- Subjective recovery (Perceived readiness): Perceived recovery improves more reliably than objective markers like creatine kinase do.
- Over a training block (Adaptation): Unlike cold immersion alone, it appears not to clearly blunt strength and hypertrophy adaptation.
Muscles trained
Intensity
1.3 METs (Whirlpool, sitting).
Time to effect
- Days: Soreness benefits appear within one to two days of a session; there is no cumulative effect to build.
Common myth
“The hot and cold cycle pumps waste products out of the muscle.” In reality: The vascular pumping story is repeated everywhere and directly evidenced almost nowhere. The soreness reduction is real and measured; the mechanism attached to it is a guess that stuck.
