Couch Stretch
Move · Flexibility & Mobility · Movement, Typed Supps
The hip flexor stretch with the back foot up a wall — much stronger, and easy to overdo.
Stage by stage
- Set-up (Back foot elevated): Back foot up a wall or sofa, back knee padded on the floor, front foot planted ahead.
- During (Rectus femoris at length): Hip extension plus knee flexion stretches rectus femoris across both joints it crosses.
- Immediately after (Tolerance rises): The strong pulling sensation eases as the position is held; torso can come more upright over time.
- Weeks later (Hip and quad range): Range improves, though knee comfort rather than hip tolerance usually sets the ceiling.
Muscles trained
- Primary: quads, hip flexors
- Secondary: glutes, abs
Intensity
2.3 METs (Stretching, mild).
Time to effect
- Weeks: Range builds over weeks; sensation typically eases within the first few sessions as tolerance rises.
Common myth
“If it hurts, it’s working.” In reality: Sharp pain at the front of the hip or in the kneecap is not stretch sensation — it is joint or tendon complaint. A stretch that hurts sharply is being forced past what the joint permits, and nothing about the tissue benefit requires that.
