Weight Machines
Move · Resistance Training · Movement, Typed Supps
The fixed path removes the balance demand, which is both the advantage and the cost.
Stage by stage
- Setup (Path is fixed for you): The machine constrains the movement path, removing the coordination requirement and making it accessible to beginners.
- During (Target muscle fully loaded): The muscle receives tension normally, and matched-effort trials find hypertrophy comparable to free weights.
- What is missing (Stabilisers do less work): Free weights recruit trunk and supporting muscles to control the load through space; machines handle that for you.
- Weeks later (Real but narrower adaptation): Strength and size improve genuinely, with somewhat less transfer to balance and functional tasks.
Muscles trained
- Primary: quads, chest
- Secondary: lats, shoulders
Intensity
3.5 METs (Resistance (weight) training, multiple exercises, 8-15 repetitions at varied resistance).
Time to effect
- Wks–mo: Strength within weeks; hypertrophy over 8 to 12 weeks.

Common myth
“Machines do not build real strength — only free weights count.” In reality: Matched-effort trials find comparable hypertrophy in the muscles trained; free weights add stabiliser recruitment and functional transfer, which is a different advantage rather than a superior one.
