Neck Side Stretch
Move · Flexibility & Mobility · Movement, Typed Supps
The desk-neck stretch, and the shoulder position is what makes it work.
Stage by stage
- Set-up (Shoulder anchored down): The shoulder on the stretched side is held down, without which nothing lengthens.
- During (Upper trapezius): Tilting the head away loads the upper trapezius along the side of the neck.
- Vary it (Levator scapulae): Rotating the chin down toward the opposite armpit shifts the stretch to levator scapulae.
- Watch for (Neural symptoms): Tingling or radiating sensation into the arm is nerve, not muscle, and means stop.
Muscles trained
- Primary: neck, traps
- Secondary: shoulders, upper back
Intensity
2.3 METs (Stretching, mild).
Time to effect
- Minutes: Relief is immediate and short-lived; the underlying tension usually needs the position that caused it addressed too.

Common myth
“Neck tension means the muscles are short and need stretching.” In reality: Sustained low-level contraction from holding a fixed position produces the ache, and the muscle is usually not short at all. Stretching gives real short-term relief, but changing the position and taking movement breaks is what stops it recurring.
