Non-Sleep Deep Rest (Yoga Nidra)
Move · Recovery Practices · Movement, Typed Supps
Lying at the edge of sleep on purpose, guided, without falling asleep.
Stage by stage
- During (Guided attention): A systematic body scan occupies attention enough to prevent rumination while the body settles.
- The target state (Hypnagogic boundary): The practice holds you at the edge of sleep rather than passing through into it.
- Immediately after (No sleep inertia): Because deep sleep is never entered, there is none of the grogginess a long nap produces.
- Over weeks (Stress and sleep quality): Regular practice reduces perceived stress and improves reported sleep quality.
Muscles trained
Intensity
1.3 METs (Lying quietly, doing nothing, lying in bed awake, listening to music (not talking or reading)).
Time to effect
- Minutes: The restorative effect is available in a single session; stress and sleep benefits build over weeks of practice.

Common myth
“Twenty minutes of it replaces hours of sleep.” In reality: It restores alertness and reduces stress, both measurable. It does not perform the memory consolidation, hormonal and metabolic work of actual sleep, and nothing in the evidence suggests it can be traded against sleep debt.
