Percussive Therapy (Massage Gun)
Move · Recovery Practices · Movement, Typed Supps
Short-term range and soreness relief, much like foam rolling.
Stage by stage
- During (Vibration and pressure): Rapid percussion alters sensory input into the muscle; nothing structural changes.
- Immediately after (Range of motion): Range improves acutely, without the temporary strength loss long static stretches cause.
- Next 24-48 hours (Soreness): Soreness falls modestly, comparable to what foam rolling achieves.
- Hours later (Effects fade): The changes are short-lived; there is no cumulative tissue adaptation.
Muscles trained
Intensity
1.3 METs (Lying quietly, doing nothing, lying in bed awake, listening to music (not talking or reading)).
Time to effect
- Minutes: Range effects are immediate and fade within minutes to hours; soreness effects last a day or two.
Common myth
“It breaks up scar tissue and releases fascia.” In reality: The forces a handheld device can generate are nowhere near what would be needed to deform fascia mechanically, and nothing measured supports adhesion breakdown. The range and soreness effects are neurological, which is a perfectly respectable mechanism — just a different one.
