World’s Greatest Stretch
Move · Flexibility & Mobility · Movement, Typed Supps
Several stretches in one, which is why it is the standard warm-up move.
Stage by stage
- Lunge (Hip flexors and adductors): A deep lunge with the elbow dropped inside the front foot loads both hips at once.
- Rotate (Thoracic spine): Reaching the arm to the ceiling adds mid-back rotation while the hips stay loaded.
- Reach (Hamstring at length): Straightening the front leg and hinging back takes the hamstring to length once it is warm.
- Before training (Dynamic, not held): Because nothing is held long, it avoids the temporary power loss that sustained static stretching causes.
Muscles trained
- Primary: hip flexors, hamstrings, upper back
- Secondary: glutes, adductors, calves, abs, shoulders
Intensity
3.8 METs (Calisthenics (e.g., push ups, sit ups, pull-ups, lunges), moderate effort).
Time to effect
- Minutes: It prepares tissue for training within a few repetitions per side; range benefits accrue over weeks.
Common myth
“Any stretching before a workout is bad.” In reality: The evidence against pre-training stretching is specifically about long static holds, which briefly reduce force output. Dynamic sequences like this one prepare tissue without that cost, which is why warm-ups moved toward them rather than away from stretching altogether.
