Alpha-GPC
Supplements · Nootropics · Supplement, Typed Supps
A choline compound that reaches your brain well — but a large study links regular use to more strokes.
Stage by stage
- Intake (Capsule): Absorbed efficiently in the small intestine.
- Small intestine (Efficient absorption): Absorbed more efficiently than many choline sources.
- Bloodstream (Crosses into the brain): Crosses into the brain more readily than many choline sources.
- Acetylcholine (Memory & muscle signalling): Used to build acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter involved in memory and muscle signalling.
What the evidence supports
- Improving cognition in dementia or vascular cognitive impairment, usually alongside a drug — limited evidence. Older Italian trials and the ASCOMALVA study suggest benefit mostly as an add-on to a prescription drug; the studies have methodological limits.
- Boosting power output and growth-hormone response acutely in athletes — limited evidence. A few small acute-dose trials show modest effects on lower-body power and hormone response around 60–90 minutes after a dose.
- Enhancing cognition in healthy adults — insufficient evidence. Direct evidence in healthy people is thin, and most positive data come from impaired populations.
- Evidence that it causes Raising 10-year stroke risk — moderate evidence. A large Korean cohort found a dose-dependent, roughly 46% higher incident stroke risk in users. This is an observational association, not proof of cause, but it is a substantial signal.
Typical dose
300–600 mg per dose; dementia trials used up to 1200 mg/day
Upper limit: No established UL
Timing
With food, standard dosing.
Time to effect
- ~1 hr: Circulating choline levels rise; cognitive effects vary.
Medication interactions
- Anticholinergic medications: Its cholinergic action may work against anticholinergic drugs. (moderate)
Common myth
“Alpha-GPC is essentially a stimulant.” In reality: It’s not stimulating like caffeine — its studied effects relate to choline availability for neurotransmitter production.
