Bacopa Monnieri
Supplements · Nootropics · Supplement, Typed Supps
One of the more consistently studied herbs for memory.
Stage by stage
- Intake (Extract capsule): Absorbed in the small intestine.
- Bloodstream (Absorbed and circulated): Active compounds are absorbed in the small intestine and circulate toward the brain.
- Neurotransmitter activity (Influences memory formation): Appears to influence neurotransmitter activity involved in memory formation.
- Onset (Slower than most nootropics): Several trials show effects specifically after weeks of consistent daily use, not sooner.
What the evidence supports
- Improving memory recall and speed of information processing with regular use — moderate evidence. A meta-analysis of randomised trials found improved memory free recall and attention. Effects build over roughly 12 weeks rather than appearing quickly.
- Giving an acute, same-day cognitive boost — insufficient evidence. It acts chronically. Single doses have not been shown to do anything useful, which is a common misunderstanding about how it works.
Typical dose
300 mg/day of extract standardised to about 50–55% bacosides (up to 600 mg)
Upper limit: No established UL
Timing
With food — can cause stomach upset otherwise.
Time to effect
- 8–12 wks: Reported memory-related effects in most studies — notably slower onset than many nootropics.
Medication interactions
- Thyroid medication (levothyroxine): Bacopa raised thyroid hormone (T4) in animal studies and may add to your dose. (moderate)
- Cholinergic and anticholinergic drugs: It raises acetylcholine; a case report described suspected cholinergic toxicity when it was combined with a cholinergic drug. (moderate)
- Sedatives: Additive drowsiness, as bacopa is mildly sedating. (moderate)
Common myth
“Bacopa works quickly like caffeine.” In reality: Its studied benefits consistently take 8–12 weeks of daily use to appear.
