Bifidobacterium Longum
Supplements · Probiotics · Supplement, Typed Supps
A gut bacterium found in healthy infants over a century ago, now being studied for a possible gut-brain connection to stress and mood — early evidence, strain-specific.
Stage by stage
- Intake (Capsule (specific strain)): Taken orally, with or without food.
- Intestine (Colonization): Transiently colonizes the gut alongside existing flora.
- Gut-brain signalling (Vagal and neuroimmune pathways): Proposed to communicate with the brain via vagal signalling and inflammatory modulation.
- Brain (Stress and mood response): Small strain-specific trials have found effects on stress hormones, brain imaging response, and depression scores.
What the evidence supports
- Reducing depressive symptoms and blunting brain response to negative stimuli in non-constipated IBS patients (strain NCC3001) — limited evidence. One 6-week randomized trial found this specific strain improved depression scores and reduced amygdala reactivity to negative stimuli in IBS patients, alongside brain-imaging changes. A single trial, even a well-designed one with imaging endpoints, isn’t enough to call this an established effect.
- Reducing perceived stress and stress-hormone response in healthy adults (strain 1714) — limited evidence. Small trials of B. longum 1714 found reduced self-reported stress and a blunted cortisol response to an acute stressor, plus modest sleep improvements during exam-period stress — an early but promising, strain-specific signal.
- General mood or anxiety benefit across Bifidobacterium longum as a species — insufficient evidence. Effects appear strongly strain-dependent — results from one studied strain (1714 or NCC3001) don’t necessarily generalize to a generic 'B. longum' product, and even among studied strains, at least one small trial found no reduction in stress, anxiety, or depression from acute B. longum intake.
Typical dose
1-10 billion CFU/day in most trials, varying by the specific strain and study
Upper limit: No established UL
Timing
Take daily, with or without food.
Time to effect
- Several weeks: Mood and stress-related outcome trials have generally assessed effects after multiple weeks of continued use.
Common myth
“Any Bifidobacterium longum product will calm your gut-brain axis.” In reality: The meaningful stress and mood research is tied to specific named strains (1714, NCC3001) in their own small trials — a product that just lists the species without the strain hasn’t been shown to do the same thing.
