Boron
Supplements · Minerals · Supplement, Typed Supps
Studied for how it helps your body use other minerals.
Stage by stage
- Intake (Tablet): Absorbed efficiently, more so than many minerals.
- Small intestine (Efficient absorption): Absorbed efficiently, more so than many minerals.
- Bloodstream (Circulates): Appears to influence how the body metabolizes calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D.
- Bone-related pathways (Mechanism still studied): The exact mechanism is still being researched.
What the evidence supports
- Influencing how the body handles steroid hormones and minerals such as calcium and magnesium — limited evidence. Small, short human studies show measurable effects on hormone and mineral metabolism, but few translate into hard clinical outcomes.
- Improving bone density or reducing fracture risk — insufficient evidence. The bone claim rests largely on animal work and mechanism; there are no adequately powered fracture trials in people.
Typical dose
3 mg daily, the dose used in most studies
Upper limit: 20 mg/day from all sources (US tolerable upper intake level)
Timing
With food, standard dosing.
Time to effect
- Weeks: Any measurable effect.
Common myth
“Boron is basically a bone-building mineral itself.” In reality: Better understood as supporting how your body uses other bone-related nutrients, not building bone directly.
