Boswellia
Supplements · Joint Health · Supplement, Typed Supps
An extract from tree resin, studied for its anti-inflammatory compounds.
Stage by stage
- Intake (Extract capsule): Historically had absorption challenges, though newer extraction methods improve this.
- Small intestine (Absorbed): Absorbed into the bloodstream.
- Bloodstream (Circulates): Circulates through the blood before reaching inflammatory pathways in joint tissue.
- Inflammatory pathways (Joint discomfort studies): Studied for effects on inflammatory pathways involved in joint discomfort.
What the evidence supports
- Reducing pain and stiffness in knee osteoarthritis — moderate evidence. Several randomised trials and meta-analyses show improved WOMAC pain, stiffness and function with standardised extracts. Effect sizes are modest, and study heterogeneity and industry involvement temper confidence.
Typical dose
100–250 mg daily of an AKBA-enriched extract, or higher doses of standardised whole extract
Upper limit: No established UL
Timing
With food, standard dosing.
Time to effect
- Weeks: Any reported joint comfort change in studies.
Common myth
“Boswellia works as fast as anti-inflammatory medication.” In reality: Effects build gradually over weeks — not comparable in speed to OTC anti-inflammatories.
