Citicoline (CDP-Choline)
Supplements · Nootropics · Supplement, Typed Supps
A natural brain-building-block compound, sold as a prescription drug for stroke in some countries and as a supplement here — the human proof for boosting a healthy brain is much thinner than the proof for medical use.
Stage by stage
- Intake (Capsule): Taken orally, typically 250–1,000mg.
- Small intestine (Hydrolyzed): Broken down into choline and cytidine before absorption.
- Bloodstream (Circulates): Components travel through the blood and cross into the brain.
- Brain (Membrane & neurotransmitter synthesis): Resynthesized to build cell membranes and support acetylcholine production.
What the evidence supports
- Supporting cognitive function in people with mild cognitive impairment, vascular cognitive impairment, or post-stroke recovery — limited evidence. A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis of citicoline in these clinical populations found a positive pooled effect on cognitive measures, but the authors flagged poor overall study quality and significant risk of bias favoring the intervention — so 'limited' rather than 'strong' is the honest read.
- Enhancing memory or cognition in healthy adults — insufficient evidence. A randomized trial in healthy older adults with age-associated memory complaints found citicoline (500mg/day for 12 weeks) improved some memory measures versus placebo, but this is a small, single trial — not the kind of replicated evidence needed to call this established.
- Evidence on Short-term tolerability — moderate evidence. Doses from 250 to 2,000mg/day have been used across trials with generally good tolerability and no serious safety signals reported.
Typical dose
250–1,000mg/day in most trials; healthy-adult studies commonly used 500mg/day, while studies in neurodegenerative or vascular conditions typically used 1,000mg/day.
Upper limit: No established UL
Timing
Can be taken with or without food; splitting higher doses across the day is common practice.
Time to effect
- Weeks: Trials in cognitively impaired populations typically assessed outcomes after 8–12+ weeks of daily use.
Common myth
“Citicoline is basically the same as choline supplements.” In reality: Citicoline is metabolized differently and has a distinct evidence base (including use as a stroke drug abroad) compared to plain choline salts like choline bitartrate — they are not interchangeable in terms of research support.
