Collagen Peptides
Supplements · Amino Acids · Supplement, Typed Supps
A protein your body breaks apart like any other.
Stage by stage
- Intake (Powder): Digested like any dietary protein, broken into individual amino acids and small peptides.
- Small intestine (Absorbed): Absorbed into the same general amino acid pool as any other protein source.
- Bloodstream (Joins general amino acid pool): Enters the bloodstream as the same general amino acid pool as any other protein source.
- Tissues (Used wherever needed): Your body decides where those amino acids get used — not guaranteed to specifically rebuild skin or joint collagen.
What the evidence supports
- Reducing joint pain in athletes and people with osteoarthritis — moderate evidence. Several trials at 10 g daily report modest improvement. Mechanistically odd — collagen is digested into amino acids like any protein — but the peptide fragments may act as a signal rather than a building material.
- Improving skin elasticity and hydration — moderate evidence. Multiple randomised trials show small measurable improvements. Many are industry-funded and the effect sizes are modest.
- Being a good general protein source — insufficient evidence. It is an incomplete protein, missing tryptophan, and low in the amino acids that drive muscle synthesis. Whey or food protein does that job far better.
Typical dose
2.5–10 g daily, with joint trials clustering at 5–10 g and skin trials spread across the range
Upper limit: No formal UL. Trials have used up to 20 g daily without safety signals
Timing
With food, standard dosing.
Time to effect
- Wks–mo: Any reported skin/joint benefit in studies, results vary considerably.
Medication interactions
- Levothyroxine: Not a pharmacological interaction — an absorption one. Levothyroxine has to be taken on an empty stomach, and collagen is a protein, so treat it as food and keep it away from the morning tablet. (moderate)
- Bisphosphonates (alendronate and similar): Same problem. These need plain water on an empty stomach; a collagen drink taken alongside will cut how much you absorb. (moderate)
- No established pharmacological interactions beyond that: Collagen peptides are digested into ordinary amino acids, and no clinically important drug interaction has been documented. Worth saying plainly rather than padding the list — this is one of the genuinely quiet supplements. (moderate)
Common myth
“Collagen supplements directly rebuild your skin’s collagen.” In reality: Once digested, it becomes the same amino acid pool as any protein — the supplement doesn’t direct where they’re used.
