Type I Collagen
Supplements · Joint Health · Supplement, Typed Supps
The main structural protein in your skin, bones, and connective tissue, sold as a broken-down powder your gut can actually absorb and use as raw material — with genuine, if modest, evidence behind it.
Stage by stage
- Intake (Powder or capsule): Taken orally as hydrolyzed collagen peptides.
- Small intestine (Peptide absorption): Absorbed as small bioactive peptides via specialized transporters.
- Bloodstream (Circulates): Travels through the blood to tissues throughout the body.
- Skin, joints & bone (Tissue signalling): Supplies raw material and signals connective tissue cells to boost their own collagen production.
What the evidence supports
- Improving skin hydration and elasticity — moderate evidence. Multiple placebo-controlled trials and meta-analyses of hydrolyzed collagen peptides (which include Type I collagen-derived peptides) show measurable improvements in skin hydration and elasticity over 8–12+ weeks, making this one of the better-supported uses.
- Reducing joint pain and supporting joint comfort — limited evidence. Randomized trials using around 10g/day of hydrolyzed collagen peptides have shown benefit for joint discomfort and osteoarthritis symptoms, but effect sizes are modest, trials are often industry-funded, and doses below about 2.5g/day lack solid support despite sometimes being marketed as effective.
- Increasing bone mineral density — limited evidence. One randomized, placebo-controlled 12-month trial in postmenopausal women found a specific collagen peptide (5g/day) increased bone mineral density at the spine and femoral neck versus placebo — a genuinely interesting single-trial finding that needs independent replication before being called established.
Typical dose
10g/day of hydrolyzed collagen peptides is the most consistently studied dose for joint and skin outcomes; the one positive bone density trial used 5g/day over 12 months.
Upper limit: No established UL
Timing
Take daily, with or without food; consistent daily use over months matters more than timing.
Time to effect
- Weeks: Skin hydration and elasticity improvements have been measured at 8–12 weeks.
- Months: The one positive bone mineral density trial measured change over a full 12 months of daily use.
Common myth
“Collagen supplements just get digested like any other protein and can’t reach your skin or joints.” In reality: Hydrolyzed collagen contains small peptides (like Pro-Hyp) that appear to survive digestion intact enough to be detected in blood after oral dosing and are thought to signal skin and joint cells directly — a genuinely distinct mechanism from simply eating protein, though the size of the resulting clinical benefit is still modest.
