Bovine Colostrum
Supplements · Digestive Health · Supplement, Typed Supps
The first milk a cow makes after giving birth, packed with immune proteins.
Stage by stage
- Intake (Powder or capsule): Contains immune antibodies and growth factors, some of which survive digestion better than typical dietary protein.
- Stomach (Partial survival): Some active components partially survive stomach acid, more than most proteins.
- Gut lining (Local immune interaction): Interacts with gut lining and gut-associated immune tissue.
- Gut & immune function (Studied outcomes): Studied for supporting gut lining integrity and immune function, particularly in athletes and in early-life nutrition contexts.
What the evidence supports
- Reducing the number of upper-respiratory infection days or episodes in athletes and active adults — limited evidence. A meta-analysis of small randomised trials found fewer upper-respiratory symptom days with supplementation, but the individual studies are small and varied, so the finding is suggestive rather than firm.
- Reducing exercise-induced increases in gut permeability ('leaky gut' from hard training) — limited evidence. Several small trials show reduced gut-permeability markers, though results are mixed and some show no change or even an increase during heavy running.
- Evidence on Long-term safety and broad immune benefit in the general healthy population — insufficient evidence. Studies are short and mostly in athletes; there is little to support routine use for general immunity.
Typical dose
Doses in trials range widely: roughly 0.5–1 g/day in some respiratory-infection studies, up to 20–60 g/day for performance and gut-permeability work
Upper limit: No established UL
Timing
On an empty stomach, in most studied protocols, to maximize how much survives digestion intact.
Time to effect
- Weeks: Any reported gut or immune-related effect in studies.
Common myth
“Colostrum supplements work the same way as colostrum does for a newborn.” In reality: A newborn’s gut is uniquely permeable right after birth in a way adult digestive systems aren’t — the mechanism in adults is different and generally more modest.
