Essential Amino Acids (EAAs)
Supplements · Sports Performance · Supplement, Typed Supps
The nine amino acids your body can’t produce on its own, taken as a fast-absorbing powder to help trigger muscle repair and growth.
Stage by stage
- Intake (EAA powder in water): Taken as free-form amino acids, no digestion required.
- Small intestine (Rapid absorption): Absorbed quickly through intestinal transporters.
- Bloodstream (Fast aminoacidemia): Amino acid levels rise faster than from whole protein.
- Muscle tissue (mTORC1 signalling): Leucine triggers the muscle protein synthesis signal.
What the evidence supports
- Stimulating muscle protein synthesis when leucine-enriched — moderate evidence. Controlled studies show free-form essential amino acid blends, when leucine-enriched, can stimulate muscle protein synthesis at doses as low as 1.5-6 g, and that EAA-plus-whey combinations produce a substantially greater anabolic response than whey alone in some trials.
- Being as effective as a full 20-40 g whey protein serving on a gram-for-gram basis — limited evidence. Small EAA doses can match some effects of larger whole-protein servings for the specific outcome of acute muscle protein synthesis stimulation, but whole protein sources also provide additional nutritional value (non-essential amino acids, other nutrients, satiety) that pure EAA products don't, so they aren't simple interchangeable equivalents.
- Evidence on General safety at typical supplemental doses — moderate evidence. Free-form amino acids are generally well tolerated in the doses studied, with no major safety signal in the trial literature, though people with kidney disease should be cautious with any high-protein-load supplement.
Typical dose
5–15 g per serving, most effective when leucine-enriched (roughly 2–3 g leucine per dose), often taken around workouts or between meals.
Upper limit: No established UL specific to EAA supplements.
Timing
Best absorbed on an empty or lightly-fed stomach, often taken around workouts.
Time to effect
- Under an hour: Muscle protein synthesis signalling is activated within roughly 30–60 minutes in lab studies.
- Months: Visible muscle mass or strength changes take weeks to months of consistent training.
Common myth
“EAAs work better than whole protein because they absorb faster.” In reality: Faster absorption is real, but for someone already eating enough whole protein, matched doses of food-based protein generally produce a comparable muscle protein synthesis response, while also providing nutrients isolated EAA powders don’t.
