Ecdysterone
Supplements · Adaptogens & Stress Herbs · Supplement, Typed Supps
A compound plants and insects use as a hormone, being studied in people for muscle and strength gains — with real, if early, human trial evidence behind it.
Stage by stage
- Intake (Capsule or powder): Taken by mouth, typically split into two daily doses.
- Small intestine (Absorbed): Absorbed following oral intake of a standardized extract.
- Bloodstream (Circulates): Carried through the blood to tissues throughout the body.
- Skeletal muscle (Estrogen receptor beta signalling): Proposed to activate a muscle-building pathway distinct from anabolic steroids.
What the evidence supports
- Increasing lean body mass and strength in resistance-trained men over 10 weeks at 200–800mg/day — moderate evidence. A well-cited randomized, placebo-controlled trial (Isenmann et al., 2019) found dose-dependent gains in lean mass and bench-press strength; it's one of the better-designed human trials in this space, but the evidence base is still built on a small number of studies.
- Improving walking speed and lower-limb function in elderly people with sarcopenia — limited evidence. A Phase 2b randomized trial of a purified 20-hydroxyecdysone drug candidate (BIO101) found a statistically significant improvement in the per-protocol population but not in the full analysis set — a promising but not yet conclusive signal.
- Working through classic anabolic-androgenic hormone pathways like testosterone or the androgen receptor — insufficient evidence. Research points to estrogen receptor beta activation as the likely mechanism, distinct from anabolic steroids, and ecdysterone does not appear to raise testosterone — mechanistically interesting, but not yet fully confirmed in humans.
Typical dose
200–800mg/day was used in the main human resistance-training trial (Isenmann et al.), typically split into multiple daily doses
Upper limit: No established UL; a Phase 2b clinical trial reported a safety and tolerability profile similar to placebo at 350–700mg/day of purified 20-hydroxyecdysone over 6–9 months, but that's a specific pharmaceutical-grade product, not necessarily equivalent to retail supplements
Timing
Typically split into two daily doses with meals, following trial protocols.
Time to effect
- 10 weeks: The main human resistance-training trial measured significant lean-mass and strength differences from placebo by the end of a 10-week course.
Common myth
“Ecdysterone is basically a legal anabolic steroid.” In reality: It doesn’t act on the androgen receptor the way anabolic-androgenic steroids do, and it doesn’t appear to suppress natural testosterone — the human trial evidence suggests a genuinely different, estrogen-receptor-beta-mediated mechanism, though it’s also far less studied in humans than either real anabolic steroids or established sports supplements like creatine.
