Glutathione
Supplements · Antioxidants · Supplement, Typed Supps
A natural antioxidant your body makes itself from three amino acids — genuinely important internally, but oral supplements face a real absorption problem before they can raise your levels much.
Stage by stage
- Intake (Oral capsule): Taken with or without food.
- Gut breakdown (Partially hydrolyzed): A gut/liver enzyme (GGT) breaks down a meaningful portion before absorption.
- Bloodstream (Modest rise): Sustained daily use over months produces a modest, measurable rise in blood levels.
- Cells and liver (Synthesis and recycling): Cells continue making and recycling their own glutathione via the gamma-glutamyl cycle.
What the evidence supports
- Raising measurable glutathione levels in blood and cells after sustained oral supplementation — moderate evidence. A 6-month randomized controlled trial in 54 healthy adults found that daily oral doses of 250 or 1,000 mg meaningfully raised glutathione in blood, red blood cells, and cheek cells, and modestly reduced an oxidative stress marker — genuine evidence that oral glutathione can do something, even though intact glutathione is substantially broken down in the gut before absorption.
- Lightening skin tone or improving melasma — limited evidence. Some randomized trials show reduced melanin at some body sites over weeks, but results are inconsistent across body sites and studies, and effects tend to fade once supplementation stops.
- Evidence on General oral tolerability at studied supplemental doses — moderate evidence. Oral glutathione has been reasonably well tolerated in the trials that exist, though most run only months, not years. This is distinct from injectable/IV glutathione, which has more safety concerns and is used outside FDA-approved indications for skin lightening.
Typical dose
250–1,000 mg/day has been used in the main trial demonstrating sustained blood-level increases, typically taken for months
Upper limit: No established UL
Timing
Can be taken with or without food; consistency over months matters more than timing.
Time to effect
- Months: The RCT demonstrating a blood/tissue-level rise measured effects at 1, 3, and 6 months of continuous use.
Common myth
“Oral glutathione pills work exactly like an IV glutathione infusion.” In reality: Oral glutathione is significantly broken down in the gut before absorption, unlike an IV infusion that bypasses digestion entirely — oral forms raise blood and tissue levels only modestly, and only with sustained use over months.
