Green-Lipped Mussel Extract
Supplements · Joint Health · Supplement, Typed Supps
A shellfish extract from New Zealand, studied for joint pain, with modest results — and an important allergy warning to know about first.
Stage by stage
- Intake (Capsule (freeze-dried or lipid extract)): Absorbed through the small intestine.
- Small intestine (Absorbed): Lipid compounds taken up alongside normal digestion.
- Bloodstream (Circulates): Carried through the blood to tissues throughout the body.
- Joint tissue (Cartilage and synovial tissue): Omega-3 lipid compounds are studied for anti-inflammatory activity relevant to joint pain.
What the evidence supports
- Reducing pain and improving function in osteoarthritis — limited evidence. A 2021 systematic review of clinical trials found green-lipped mussel extract produced small-to-moderate improvements in pain and joint function compared to placebo in some trials, though results were inconsistent across studies and the optimal dose and formulation remain unclear. It isn’t strong enough evidence to support use as a standalone osteoarthritis treatment.
- Anti-inflammatory activity via omega-3 fatty acids and other lipid compounds — moderate evidence. Green-lipped mussel contains a distinctive profile of omega-3 fatty acids, including ones not found in fish oil, with documented anti-inflammatory activity in lab and animal studies. This mechanistic and preclinical evidence is fairly solid, even though its translation into consistent clinical pain relief is less certain.
- Evidence on Safety and shellfish allergy risk — strong evidence. As a shellfish-derived product, green-lipped mussel extract carries a well-documented risk of allergic reaction in people with shellfish allergies, and this is listed as a contraindication in professional drug information monographs — a genuinely important safety consideration, not a minor caveat.
Typical dose
210–1150mg/day of freeze-dried extract or lipid extract in clinical trials, varying by formulation type
Upper limit: No established UL
Timing
Take with food; check whether the product is a freeze-dried powder or lipid extract, since they differ in dose and allergen content.
Time to effect
- Weeks to months: Trials measuring osteoarthritis pain relief generally assessed outcomes after several weeks to a few months of daily use.
Common myth
"Green-lipped mussel is a gentle, universally safe natural joint remedy." In reality: It is a genuine shellfish product. Anyone with a shellfish or mollusk allergy should avoid it entirely, since it carries a real risk of allergic reaction — this is a documented contraindication, not a minor caveat.
