L-Theanine
Supplements · Amino Acids · Supplement, Typed Supps
Calm without making you sleepy.
Stage by stage
- Intake (Capsule or tea): Absorbed quickly in the small intestine.
- Small intestine (Absorbed quickly): Absorbed quickly and efficiently, since it’s a small, simple amino acid.
- Bloodstream (Crosses into the brain): Passes into the brain relatively quickly after absorption.
- Brain (Alpha wave activity): Increases calming brain wave activity without sedation — often paired with caffeine.
What the evidence supports
- Reducing the jitteriness of caffeine when taken together — moderate evidence. The best-supported use. Combination trials fairly consistently show better sustained attention and less of the edge than caffeine alone.
- Reducing acute stress and anxiety — limited evidence. Several small trials show modest short-term reductions in stress measures. Effects are real but subtle, not sedative.
- Improving sleep — limited evidence. Some evidence for sleep quality rather than sleep onset — it does not make you drowsy.
Typical dose
100–200 mg, taken as a single dose alongside caffeine
Upper limit: No formal UL. Trials have given 250–400 mg daily for up to eight weeks with minimal reported side effects, and single doses up to 1,000 mg have been used in research. The safety record over the supplement range is good, though long-term data are thin.
Timing
Any time; often paired with caffeine, or alone before bed.
Time to effect
- ~1 hr: Effects are fairly quick and short-lived.
Medication interactions
- Blood pressure medication: Theanine has a modest blood-pressure-lowering effect of its own, so the two could be additive. The interaction is theoretical rather than documented in trials; check your readings when you start. (moderate)
- Sedatives and other CNS depressants: Possible additive drowsiness. Theanine is not itself a sedative, so this is a caution rather than an established problem. (moderate)
Common myth
“It makes you drowsy like a sedative.” In reality: Most research shows calm alertness rather than drowsiness.
