Magnolia Bark
Supplements · Sleep & Calming Herbs · Supplement, Typed Supps
A traditional Chinese medicinal bark studied for its calming compounds honokiol and magnolol, with modest human evidence for stress and thinner evidence for sleep specifically.
Stage by stage
- Intake (Capsule or extract): Taken as a standardized capsule, evening or divided through the day.
- Small intestine (Absorbed): Absorbed alongside normal digestion.
- Bloodstream (Circulates): Carried through the blood, including into the brain.
- Brain chemistry (GABA-A receptors (studied)): Honokiol modulates GABA-A receptors in lab studies, plausibly explaining its calming effect.
What the evidence supports
- Reducing stress and anxiety — limited evidence. A small pilot trial of a proprietary magnolia-and-phellodendron extract (Relora) in healthy, stress-prone women found reduced transient anxiety scores over six weeks compared with placebo, though salivary cortisol, sleep quality and appetite didn't significantly change. This is a small, single-product trial, not a broad evidence base.
- Improving sleep — insufficient evidence. Honokiol shows GABA-A receptor activity in lab studies, which is the basis for its use in sleep formulas, but dedicated, well-powered human sleep trials isolating magnolia bark are lacking.
- Evidence on Short-term tolerability — moderate evidence. A 2018 review of the toxicology literature concluded honokiol and magnolol are generally safe for human consumption in studied doses, with trials up to several weeks showing good tolerability; long-term human safety data beyond that is limited.
Typical dose
200-300mg of standardized extract (often 90%+ combined honokiol and magnolol), taken 30-45 minutes before bed, or divided doses of a magnolia-phellodendron blend during the day for stress
Upper limit: No established UL
Timing
Typically taken 30-45 minutes before bed, or in divided daytime doses for stress.
Time to effect
- Weeks: The main human anxiety trial measured benefit after six weeks of continuous daily use.
Common myth
“Magnolia bark is a well-proven sleep supplement.” In reality: Its GABA-receptor activity is well documented in the lab, but the human trial evidence is really about mild stress and anxiety reduction using a specific proprietary blend — not a dedicated, well-powered sleep trial.
