MSM
Supplements · Joint Health · Supplement, Typed Supps
A sulphur compound usually sold alongside glucosamine.
Stage by stage
- Intake (Capsule or powder): Absorbed relatively well compared to many joint-support compounds.
- Small intestine (Relatively well absorbed): Absorbed relatively well compared to many joint-support compounds.
- Connective tissue (Provides sulfur): Provides sulfur, a building block for connective tissue.
- Joint comfort (Modest anti-inflammatory effect): Studied for modest anti-inflammatory and joint comfort effects.
What the evidence supports
- Reducing pain and improving function in knee osteoarthritis — limited evidence. Small, short randomised trials (typically 3 g once or twice daily for around 12 weeks) show improvements in WOMAC pain and function versus placebo. The trials are small and brief, so the effect is not firmly established.
- Speeding exercise recovery or reducing muscle soreness — insufficient evidence. A popular claim with only small, inconsistent studies behind it.
Typical dose
1.5–6 g daily, often 3 g once or twice a day
Upper limit: No established UL; 2.6–6 g daily has been used safely for up to 12 weeks
Timing
With food, standard dosing.
Time to effect
- Weeks: Any reported joint comfort effect in studies.
Common myth
“MSM cures joint pain.” In reality: Studies show modest improvements for some people, not a cure.
