Bee Propolis
Supplements · Immune & Antimicrobial Herbs · Supplement, Typed Supps
The resin bees use to seal and protect their hive, taken as a supplement for immune support.
Stage by stage
- Intake (Spray, capsule, or tincture): Taken orally, often starting at the first sign of illness.
- Stomach & intestine (Absorbed): Resin flavonoids and phenolics absorbed through the mouth and gut.
- Bloodstream (Circulates): Carried through the blood to tissues throughout the body.
- Immune system (Modulated): Shows antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity in lab studies, with modest supporting human trials.
What the evidence supports
- Reducing severity or duration of upper respiratory tract infection symptoms — limited evidence. Several small randomized trials of standardized propolis extracts, often as an oral spray or capsule, report faster symptom resolution versus placebo — one trial found 83% symptom remission by day three versus placebo. But trials are heterogeneous in propolis source and standardization and generally small, limiting confidence.
- General immune support in healthy people for illness prevention — insufficient evidence. Marketing claims here outrun the evidence; most positive trials studied people already sick with a respiratory infection, not healthy daily supplementation for prevention.
- Evidence on Allergic reactions in people sensitive to bee products — moderate evidence. Propolis contains plant resins and pollen fragments and can trigger allergic contact dermatitis or, in bee-product-allergic individuals, more serious reactions — well documented in case reports and occupational studies of beekeepers.
Typical dose
Studied doses commonly range from about 400–900mg daily of standardized extract, divided into 2–3 doses; oral sprays are typically used a few times daily during illness.
Upper limit: No established UL; long-term high-dose safety data are limited.
Timing
Typically used a few times daily starting at symptom onset, rather than as a continuous daily preventive.
Time to effect
- Days: Some trials report faster symptom resolution within roughly 2–3 days versus placebo, though this varies by product.
Common myth
“Propolis is a natural immune-boosting cure-all.” In reality: "Propolis" isn’t one fixed substance — its chemistry varies by region and plant source — and most positive human trials studied people already sick, using it to recover faster, not healthy daily prevention.
