Yerba Mate
Supplements · Cognitive & Vitality Herbs · Supplement, Typed Supps
A caffeinated tea from South America, traditionally sipped hot through a metal straw from a shared gourd.
Stage by stage
- Intake (Steeped leaf infusion): Dried leaves steeped in hot water, traditionally in a gourd.
- Stomach & intestine (Absorbed): Caffeine and polyphenols absorbed through the gut lining.
- Bloodstream (Circulates): Carried through the blood, metabolized by the liver.
- Central nervous system (Stimulated): Caffeine blocks adenosine receptors, producing alertness.
What the evidence supports
- Providing an alertness or energy boost — moderate evidence. Contains caffeine plus theobromine and theophylline; alertness effects are consistent with its caffeine content, similar evidence quality to coffee or tea for this specific effect.
- Evidence on Increased risk of esophageal and other cancers with long-term, heavy, very hot consumption — moderate evidence. Multiple case-control studies from South America link long-term consumption of very hot (>65°C) mate with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, and IARC classifies drinking very hot beverages as probably carcinogenic (Group 2A). Growing evidence points to drinking temperature, not something unique to mate's chemistry, as the driver — cooler mate hasn't shown the same risk.
- Evidence on Liver safety with typical use — insufficient evidence. Rare case reports of clinically apparent liver injury exist despite widespread traditional use, but a causal mechanism and dose threshold aren't established.
Typical dose
Traditional preparations use roughly 1–3g of dried leaf per serving (heavy traditional use can reach 25–30g/day); supplement capsules typically supply 1.5–3g daily.
Upper limit: No established UL; caffeine content varies, so treat it like any caffeinated tea and stay under the general ~400mg/day caffeine ceiling for healthy adults.
Timing
Let it cool before drinking — the main documented risk is tied to drinking any beverage scalding hot, not the plant itself.
Time to effect
- Under an hour: Alertness effects appear within 30–60 minutes.
Common myth
“Yerba mate causes cancer.” In reality: The epidemiological signal is specifically tied to drinking it very hot in large amounts over many years — cooler, moderate consumption hasn’t shown the same risk.
